C.F. Moller win competition for landmark development

Earlier this year, German Rail received planning approval from the Rail Authority to relocate Hamburg Altona terminus station, enabling a smoother journey for trains to continue into the city centre without the need to reverse when leaving the depot. Looking beyond the immediate need for improved rail services, the Hamburg authorities ran a competition for an ambitious new station development to act as a landmark for the region and a catalyst for urban growth. C.F. Møller Architects have now been announced as the winners, with a proposal interlinking nature and city life.

The architects conceived the design around three main elements: the base, two towers and a roofscape. The base contains the public realm and new Altona North Train station, providing the backdrop to a wide range of activities including restaurants, shops, fitness facilities, bicycle parking, waiting areas and entrance lobbies. The two towers accommodate a hotel and office spaces with views of Hamburg, while the connective roof landscape binds the elements together and provides a canopy for the outdoor public functions at ground level.

Above the roof, a park embodies a collective and progressive vision to reinforce Hamburg’s green credentials. Mads Mandrup Hansen, Partner and Architect at C.F. Møller Architects, stated: “The project will be a beacon in the future development of the Diebsteich quarter. Our vision is to connect the station, city quarter, hotel and office building with a distinctive green profile, which reflects the green focus of the city of Hamburg."
