Progress for research & development centre masterplanned by KCAP

The Technical University of Munich (TU München) has moved into LabCampus, the innovation district at Munich Airport masterplanned by Tendestream member KCAP. TU München is establishing its new TUM Convergence Centre at the new district, occupying 20,400 sq m across Lab 48 and Lab 52, the first two realised buildings in the campus's opening cluster. The hub will house research in mobility, robotics and AI, including parts of TUM's Munich Institute of Robotics and Machine Intelligence, alongside a new Sustainable Aviation Centre.

KCAP designed the masterplan for LabCampus together with Studio Vulkan Landschaftsarchitektur and MIC-HUB. The masterplan encompasses 500,000 sq m for research, development and innovation across four quadrants. The vision is to foster collaboration between start-ups, global players, creative minds, and investors, all connected through one of Europe's major transportation hubs.

The proto-urban quality of the plan integrates urban design principles into a commercial context. High-end, experimental, and temporary buildings coexist within a flexible spatial framework that fosters innovation and transformation. A central public axis, the Isarboulevard, will shape the identity of the campus, connecting the clusters and creating open spaces for exchange, leisure, and community life. This emphasis on long-term placemaking is intended to ensure that LabCampus evolves as both a workplace and a destination.

The design redefines the workplace as a shared landscape for discovery, collaboration, and forward-thinking. Anchored in the unique landscape setting of the Isar floodplain and supported by an advanced multi-mobility concept, the district combines sustainability with global connectivity. By bringing together start-ups, and research institutions in one open environment, the aim is to position Munich Airport as a gateway not just to the world, but to the future.
