IDOM design sustainable upgrade for historic stadium in Chile

IDOM has been awarded the ArchDaily Building of the Year 2026 in the Sports Architecture category for the project to modernise the Universidad Católica Stadium (Claro Arena) in Santiago, Chile. IDOM’s design transformed the stadium into a contemporary 20,000-capacity venue, while respecting important aspects of its history.

The arena is not only home to the Cruzados football team, but is also equipped to host shows, events, and civic activities throughout the year. The stadium’s former stands remain largely intact, integrated into a light and permeable structure that expands the arena’s capacity. A new perimeter boulevard connects all the various areas, which are situated within an overall layout that adopts a rectangular geometry, optimising sightlines and functionality. The corners become unique spaces that mark access points and offer multipurpose rooms with views of the surrounding landscape and the pitch, suitable for use during matches and for other events.

The project sets a new standard for the application of the circular economy to sports architecture. The existing concrete structure was reused, while materials such as steel from the old roof and plastic from the stands’ seats were recycled. The façade and roof are constructed with Chilean radiata pine wood from forests managed by CMPC, who plant, grow, and cut trees for use in construction, ensuring a sustainable cycle. Manufacturing and assembly were carried out using a locally developed system and local labour, maximising the project’s positive impact on the regional economy.
