Pioneering research & education centre consolidates faculties of pharmacy & medicine

In the Czech Republic, the inauguration ceremony has taken place for the new Charles University campus, designed by Tenderstream member Bogle Architects. As one of the largest investments in the university’s history, the MEPHARED 2 campus, also connected to the Hradec Králové University Hospital, consolidates teaching and research facilities for the faculties of both pharmacy and medicine. Ian Bogle noted that the inauguration marked the completion of “a seven year journey for the team from the first sketch, and I have to congratulate everyone on achieving this amazing milestone.”

Expected to become significant across Europe in the fields of medicine, pharmacy, and biomedicine, the complex is designed to accommodate up to 4500 people. Teaching and related research workplaces are located in the faculty buildings, alongside lecture halls with state-of-the-art audiovisual technology, a library, seminar rooms, student laboratories, and practice rooms. A smaller building houses the dean's offices and the catering facility. A feature of the building from a technical perspective is the combination of a monolithic structure, prefabricated elements, and girders made of prestressed concrete with a span of over 24m, with steel rods carrying the ceiling of a section of the building over three floors.

The new campus will improve conditions for study, teaching, and research, while at the same time supporting the development of interdisciplinary cooperation, master's and doctoral study programmes, international mobility, and student exchanges. Qualified health experts from both faculties will collaborate to solve current problems in health care related to an ageing population and the increasing prevalence of diseases. Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš stated: “This is one of the largest investments in the history of Czech higher education…and I am very pleased that it has been successfully implemented. The project, worth more than 7bn CZK, shows how effectively we can use European and national subsidies for the development of key infrastructure.”
