Nature-inspired vision unveiled for Samsung C&T Corporation towers
Tenderstream member UNStudio has released the designs for the new Hannamdong-4 Residences in Seoul, created in collaboration with Samsung C&T Corporation. Based on the concept of a ‘Biophilic Nexus,’ the design seeks to enhance both individual well-being and community connectivity by drawing inspiration from distinct local characteristics. This holistic approach is intended to prioritise well-being and sustainability, in an environment where the city and nature coexist in harmony.
In order to mitigate against the growing disconnect between the Namsan Mountain and the Han River - in part due to Seoul’s rapid urbanisation and sprawl - the development will include features that symbolize and reflect the region’s heritage. The façade design is inspired by waterlilies emblematic of the Han River, as well as the white pine, which was believed to have disappeared but has now re-emerged across the city.
A flexible layout for residential spaces accommodates changing family configurations and diverse lifestyles, while the shared spaces are designed to foster a sense of community, even in a densely populated urban environment. A community centre will offer 360-degree panoramic views, and a 365-metre-long eco-friendly elevated walkway will feature jogging tracks and year-round gardens for residents and locals alike.
Ben van Berkel, founder and principal architect, UNStudio, stated: “Hannamdong-4 Residences is an incredibly exciting project because it represents a new benchmark for urban living in Seoul. By blending biophilic design, sustainability and innovation, we are creating a unique residential experience that harmonises the vitality of the city with the tranquility of nature. This project is not just about architecture—it’s about shaping a future where people, community, and the environment thrive together.”
