Cobe unite form and function to celebrate ‘Master of the Chair’
Tenderstream member Cobe have revealed the design for Museum Wegner, a heritage building set to be transformed and dedicated to the life and legacy of Danish designer Hans J. Wegner, also known as the ‘Master of the Chair’. Located in Tønder in southwestern Denmark, the town where he was born and trained as a carpenter, the museum celebrates Wegner's design philosophy and commitment to craftsmanship.
The project will transform a historic farm dating back to 1445 and add a new extension, in keeping with local building traditions and the area’s cultural heritage. The overall design draws inspiration from Wegner's creative approach, which merged the sculptural with the practical, while the building itself will feature his preferred material of wood. Through visible, simple constructions, traditional building techniques, and an honest use of materials, the architecture is intended to embrace a clear connection between form and function.
Currently, Tønder Municipality's tourism strategy is particularly focused on attracting nature tourists who want to experience the flora and fauna of the Wadden Sea. However, it is hoped that a new cultural institution will attract tourists interested in design and architecture. As Wegner was brought up and trained in Tønder, his connection to the landscape represents untapped potential for the town.
Cobe founder and architect, Dan Stubbergaard stated: "We are humbled and honoured to have the opportunity to pay tribute to Hans J. Wegner - one of the great masters of Danish design. The new museum will be located at ‘Hestholm’ - one of the historic marsh farms in the Tønder area. In a mix of transformation of the existing farm and new extensions, the museum will provide the physical setting for Wegner's design universe in a way that respects the nature and cultural heritage of the local area, while also incorporating the international appeal that defines Wegner's furniture.”
