Scott Brownrigg create flexible & sustainable facility to boost creative industry
Shinfield Studios, a new £250m film and TV studio designed by Tenderstream member Scott Brownrigg, has reached completion in Reading, UK. The one million sq ft facility features 18 sound stages, 38 workshops and a 9 acre filming backlot, together with contemporary office space, making it the largest new-build studio campus in the UK. Built for US-based Shadowbox Studios, the facility is set to boost the UK's creative industry and build on its global reputation for content production.
Each of the sound stages are fully climate controlled, flexible in layout, and equipped with state-of-the-art equipment. Multifunctional workshops accommodate a wide range of production requirements, from costume and wardrobe to action vehicles and armoury. At the heart of the campus, a studio café and canteen provide a place for production teams to come together to eat and relax, with views over the surrounding countryside.
To facilitate speed to market, 80,000 sq ft of studio space was erected and made operational within just six months of the project starting onsite in 2021. The design adopts an innovative steel twin wall system, which allowed for swift construction and a building with high acoustic values that can adapt to differing conditions. As a result, productions including Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire have already taken place at the studios. The twin wall solution also offered a sustainable alternative to concrete, with air source heat pumps and solar panels providing renewable energy sources.
Jason Lebidineuse, Guildford studio principal at Scott Brownrigg, stated: “We are delighted to see this incredible project come to life over the last three years. Our design approach and methodology challenged how studios are designed and built, changing the narrative to help create a more sustainable sector and enabling blockbuster productions to film while construction continued onsite.”
