Sustainable & resilient community planned for Bertalia-Lazzaretto neighbourhood

Designs for the new eco-district in Bologna’s Bertalia-Lazzaretto neighbourhood have been unveiled, with Tenderstream member ATI Project, a-fact, Weber Architects, and Parcnouveau revealing the proposals at a press conference hosted by the Municipality of Bologna. The initiative addresses the city’s housing needs, while aiming to create a sustainable, connected, and resilient community suited to meet future challenges.

Envisaged as a complete ecosystem that promotes social and community cohesion, the development offers multifunctional public spaces designed to serve new residents, as well as catering to the established local community. Shared spaces for well-being strengthen the new district’s identity and foster a sense of belonging. A cycle-pedestrian greenway directly connects various areas of the city, from the Pescarola neighbourhood in the north, to the new residential hub to the west of the University of Bologna. The district is part of a broader vision for urban regeneration and sustainable mobility, with the aim of improving the quality of life for residents and reducing the city’s environmental impact.

The development’s residential volumes are characterised by a diversification of heights and materials, inspired by the city’s architectural tradition. Colourful facades and varied levels create an inviting and dynamic architectural language that blends with the existing urban fabric, establishing a strong sense of place. Common spaces encourage social interaction between residents, with shared balconies and terraces. On the ground floor, courtyards and recreational areas help extend community life outdoors, while rooftop terraces offer vertical productive landscapes, integrating nature into the residential environment.
