Bee Breeders announce winners of skyscraper design content

In 2017, competition organisers Bee Breeders launched the SKYHIVE Skyscraper Challenge for an inconic high-rise office block with the potential to rewrite the definition of the modern-day skyscraper. Participants were encouraged to consider the use of novel technologies, materials, aesthetics, and spatial organizations in order to achieve this ambitious aim.

The jury assessed the submissions based on criteria including sensitivity to the environment, potential to serve as a landmark and creativity. The winning design by Suraksha Acharya from India features an innovative porous structure, which serves to soften the imposing and monumental tower block form. The design further enhances this effect by dividing the volume across two towers. Suraksha, who works at Midori Architects in Chennai, said: "As a start up firm we don’t get the opportunity to design a skyscraper every day, and open architecture competitions help us raise the standard of the team and push us to discover what might be possible in a utopian world."

In second place, Alex Sullivan-Brown and Sindre Johnsen of New Zealand developed a design inspired by the very specific idea of vertical living in a post-apocalypic world, in which the tower acts as a kind of Noah's Ark and disaster relief centre. By contrast, Jon Carag from the USA created an almost entirely universal design for an office block, with a pleasing cylindrical form surrounded by an attractive perimeter of green spaces.
