Five design teams advance to request for proposals stage

Earlier this year, the Market Lands open international design competition was launched for a mixed-use redevelopment in Winnipeg’s historic exchange district, including a pedestrianised plaza, an informal urban market and an affordable housing complex. Now, the competition jury has revealed the shortlist of five teams selected from the request for qualifications stage. “The Jury was impressed by the calibre of all twenty-three submissions,” said Angela Mathieson, president and CEO of contest organiser CentreVenture. “The task of selecting five teams was a challenging one. Careful deliberation has resulted in an exceptional and exciting list of design talent from across Canada, and including the USA and the United Kingdom.”

The successful teams are as follows:

Daoust Lestage, based in Montreal, partnered with Transolar as sustainability consultant and Rina Greer as public art consultant.

Dialog, who have studios in Canada and the USA, partnered with Jenifer Papararo as public art consultant.

Dtah, based in Toronto, partnered with Purpose Building as sustainability consultant and Entro as public art consultant.

1x1 Architecture Inc. based in Winnipeg, teamed with dRMM and LDA Design (landscape architecture) from London, England. They are joined by Atelier Ten as sustainability consultant and Lisa Kehler Art + Projects as public art consultant.

Saucier+Perrotte, based in Montreal, with  Gustafson Guthrie Nichol, a landscape architecture firm located in Seattle. They team with RWDI as sustainability consultant and Ciara McKeown as public art consultant.

The competition follows a year of public consultations, which resulted in an Urban Design Framework outlining the creation of affordable housing, new urban park spaces, and a modern public market.  The contest will take those ideas to the next level of detail, with teams required to establish a new welcoming destination celebrating the culture and history of the neighbourhood, while applying innovative design techniques including environmental sustainability.

The firms will now proceed to the request for proposals stage, culminating in a public presentation of their designs on 7th December 2018 at the Canadian Museum for Human Rights.
