Former Berlin naval club to become new museum

Earlier this year, an international competition was launched to find a design for the redevelopment of the Marinehaus, a listed building located in a central Berlin neighbourhood, Mitte. Originally a union club for naval officers, the site was abandoned for 20 years before becoming central to the Berlin City Museum’s plan to establish a cultural cluster in the area. Now, Danish firm ADEPT have been announced as the contest winners, ahead of 20 invited competitors.

The reuse of the historic building is part of the future strategy for Stadtmuseum Berlin that includes a new type of museum, closely integrated into the neighbourhood through additional use as a community centre. ADEPT responded to the brief by creating a flexible layout to contain cultural and community activities, together with historical restoration. Martin Krogh, partner at ADEPT, stated: “We are extremely proud and happy to have won 1st prize in the competition for such an amazing public initiative. Our proposal embraces both building and urban vision: a new flexible interior structure that creates spaces for both cultural activities and the local community, and at the same time a respectful transformation of the protected building.”

ADEPT achieved this vision by adopting a ‘house-in-house’ concept, in which the existing floors are removed and replaced by a new interior wooden structure, allowing visual connections between floors and creating a warm, inclusive atmosphere. The director of Stadtmuseum Berlin, Paul Spies, praised this approach for the way it promotes an open and inviting contribution to public life in the city.

Construction work in is expected to begin at the end of 2022 and will take around three years. The neighbouring Märkisches Museum, also part of the scheme, will be closed at the same time for complete renovation and modernisation.
