Pictures have been released revealing the new multi-purpose building which forms part of adidas’ World of Sports campus in Herzogenaurach, southern Germany. Designed by COBE, the new 15,500 sq m structure opened in 2018, in advance of the 70th anniversary of the iconic sports brand which took place this August. The building, named HALFTIME, contains meeting rooms, a conference centre and a showroom where the company’s brand ambassadors can stop by to see the latest new collections and designs.

COBE won the competition for the new building with a design that makes it possible to modify the building for different purposes. Company founder, Dan Stubbergaard, stated: “To accommodate the many internal and public functions that HALFTIME includes, we designed a versatile, multi-purpose building that brings as many of the company’s activities and functions as possible together under one roof. The huge rhomboid roof covers the entire building like a carpet, bringing staff, visitors and brand ambassadors together in the same building and thus enabling more and wider contacts.”

The 8,650 sq m roof consists of V-shaped concrete beams and is covered in glass, with a third of the structure consisting of skylights. Besides flooding the building with light, the designers sought to bring the outside world into the building by including natural materials, planted walls, large floor-to-ceiling windows, a ceiling height of 8 meters and conservatories with trees and plant beds.

The competition brief called for a design that communicated the values of the company, while providing a collective experience to provide networking opportunities for staff, visitors and brand ambassadors alike. Dan Stubbergaard explained how the design team rose to this challenge, saying: “A key task was to create the right atmosphere to reflect the unique adidas culture. We did this, in part, by matching the different needs with different sports, making room for big ideas and large gestures as well as a touch of humor. In addition to the event hall, which is designed as a gym, you can hold meetings at the bottom of a bright blue swimming pool, in a locker room or in the adidas founder Adi Dasler’s old workshop, complete with tools.”
