Campus development completed for one of UK’s largest city regeneration projects

The University of Bristol’s Sloane Robinson Building at the new Temple Quarter Enterprise Campus has opened, alongside the new station entrance to Bristol Temple Meads. Tenderstream member Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios (FCBS) designed the new home for three school and three research facilities, with fellow Tenderstream members Grant Associates and Arup as landscape/public realm designer and facade consultant respectively. The opening marks a major transformation in the regeneration of one of the UK’s largest regeneration projects, Bristol Temple Quarter. 

The 38,000 sq m building is situated on a prominent, but long-derelict, brownfield site by Temple Meads Train Station, the chief arrivals point of the city. At the heart of the landscape is University Square, a major new public space and focal point at the entrance to the campus. From here, tree grove arrival spaces, planted terraces and social areas extend towards the riverside and floating harbour walkway, creating places to meet, study, eat and spend time outdoors. 

The landscape was designed to accommodate activities  from everyday pedestrian and cycle movement to informal learning, socialising and events, with integrated seating and planting creating intimate spaces within the wider campus. Chin Chen, associate director at Grant Associates, said: “The Temple Quarter Enterprise Campus gave us the opportunity to rethink what the landscape of a city-centre university could be. We wanted the campus to feel rooted in Bristol — open, green and reconnecting nature with the city, rather than separated from it."

During the day the buildings reflect the city and the sky, changing at night when the interior is illuminated for all to see the activity within. A variety of teaching and learning spaces, research laboratories, offices, hack spaces, and workshops are enhanced by atria and wintergardens, social, dining, community and enterprise spaces. Professor Guy Orpen, former deputy Vice Chancellor, new campus development, stated: “We are creating a dedicated space for collaboration and discovery where businesses, civic partners and the local community can work together with our students, academics and researchers.”
