28-storey tower set to become city’s tallest building
Plans for the redevelopment of Cabot Gate were approved by Bristol City Council this week, marking a significant milestone for the city centre's ongoing regeneration. Designed by Tenderstream member AHHM, the project will transform an underutilised car park into a mixed-use destination, promoting the vision for a more connected, inclusive and vibrant Bristol. A 28-storey tower at the heart of the development, set to become the city’s tallest building, will deliver 600 student bedrooms.
Positioned at the gateway where the M32 meets Bristol, the reimagined Cabot Gate will create a new arrival point. The key connection between the St Jude’s district and the city centre will be transformed into an open space, featuring attractive and welcoming areas to sit and dwell. A new shared pedestrian and cycle lane will provide easier access, separated from the nearby road by extensive planting and landscaping. These landscaped areas will connect and continue Frome Gateway green corridor, with barren hardstanding replaced by wildlife-friendly species that will also help address urban heating and create shade. To establish further amenities for the public, the development includes a new community hub and public café.
Steve Taylor, Director at AHMM, stated: "We are delighted that Bristol City Council have approved plans for a much-needed community space, public greening and student living. Transforming a prominent and underutilised brownfield site with a mix of uses, improved public realm and community facilities places Cabot Gate as a fitting gateway to our city centre.”
