New venue set to become landmark for Copenhagen district

Tenderstream member Lundgaard & Tranberg Arkitekter has won the design competition for Tingbjerg multi-purpose arena in Copenhagen. The new hall, catering for up to 2,000 spectators, will become a new architectural landmark for Tingbjerg and a gathering place for all of Copenhagen, offering a wide range of opportunities for associations, athletes, and visitors.

The multi-purpose arena is shaped as a single, unified volume beneath a sweeping roof that seems to hover above the site like a bird’s wing. The roof rises toward the surrounding city and the surrounding landscape, while gently dipping down toward the ground, inviting people in to shelter beneath its ‘wing’. This gesture is in close dialogue with the location’s characteristics, forming a low-rise development that nestles into the marshy landscape, while the high-rise element serves as a landmark for the area. The single, freestanding building forms the smallest possible footprint on the site, making space for green, active areas around the arena.

Malene Hjortsø Kyndesen, architect and partner at Lundgaard & Tranberg Arkitekter, states: “The multi-purpose arena’s large, calm roof settles gently into the landscape like the stroke of a wing, creating an inviting presence. Beneath the roof, the many activities are visible and form a gathering place for the area, where people, life, and movement will flow into the building and out into the landscape spaces. A building creates a sense of place when it connects us to its site and history. And it becomes meaningful when its architectural motifs inspire new works of architecture.”

The project will now undergo further development, with the arena expected to open in 2030.
