Tenderstream members among teams competing to create historic space for St James' Park
Public feedback is being sought by The Queen Elizabeth Memorial Committee and the UK Cabinet Office on the designs created by five teams shortlisted in the contest to create a memorial masterplan celebrating the late Queen’s life of service. The concepts - from teams which include Tenderstream member firms Michel Desvigne Paysagiste, Arup, and WilkinsonEyre – can be viewed at the online gallery here, which features a link to a feedback form. All comments will be collated by market research company Ipsos to create a report which will advise the selection panel.
The design brief sought concepts for an emotionally powerful place and a space for pause and reflection, which is sensitive to the site within the Grade I listed St James’s Park in London. The location traverses the park from Marlborough Gate on The Mall to the Blue Bridge and across to Birdcage Walk. The competing masterplan designs will also be assessed against wider criteria, including value for money, placemaking and visitor experience.
Committee Chair, Lord Janvrin, who was Queen Elizabeth II’s former Private Secretary, explains: ‘Over her 70-year reign – the longest of any British monarch – the late Queen was an exemplary and constant presence in the United Kingdom, the Realms, and the Commonwealth…The memorial must be – simply – a beautiful place, a place to visit with friends, a place to gather, to enjoy, and to reflect on an extraordinary life.’
The winning design team will be announced in Summer 2025 after the evaluation panel reviews the finalists’ concepts. A related search for a sculptor to work with the winning design team on the memorial’s figurative representation of her Late Majesty will conclude later this year.
