Contest progresses for project to transform world-leading museum

Tenderstream members AL_A and Diller Scofidio + Renfro both belong to design teams through to the next round of the competition to upgrade the Louvre Museum. The contest was launched to find a design team to create an additional entrance in the building’s historic Perrault Colonnade, as well as establishing new exhibition halls - including a space dedicated to the Mona Lisa - and providing a renovation plan for the museum’s heritage assets and infrastructure.

The 21 members of the competition jury selected five teams to participate in the second round, as listed below:

The museum last underwent a major rehabilitation in the 1980s, with the current programme necessary to provide lasting solutions to the museum's structural problems that affect its daily operation, public visitor experience, and working conditions. The entire project is intended to ease congestion and overcrowding for visitors and staff, while integrating the museum into the geography and dense cultural dynamics of the surrounding area. When revealing the names of the competition jury in July, Rachida DATI, Minister of Culture, stated: “Forty years after the pyramid of the Grand Louvre, a new architectural and cultural impetus has been launched for the jewel that is the Louvre Museum, and a new page is being written for the cultural influence of France.”

The competition winner will be announced in January 2026.
