New neighbourhood combines research & education park with green living & work space

Tenderstream member Cobe has been selected as the winner of the competition to design Quartiere am Volkspark in Hamburg, Germany, as part of a scheme to create a mixed-use city district combining top-level international research and educational facilities alongside lively residential neighbourhoods. The approximately 55-ha Quartiere am Volkspark is situated next to the city's largest park, and will provide a university campus as well as 3,800 new apartments, together with associated social, leisure and sports facilities.

Cobe’s design features three distinct neighbourhoods, each with a unique identity shaped by the existing landscape. The Campus City contains research and education facilities – including a lecture hall complex for the University of Hamburg - within a system of squares and public spaces that underline the district’s urban character. The Garden City is inspired by the area’s existing allotments, and will include open apartment block structures and green courtyards, while the Nature City integrates with the nearby forest.

At the heart of the development, a green corridor links the neighbourhoods and connects with Hamburg’s extensive network of green spaces, including the adjacent Volkspark Altona. This nature-inspired backbone will enhance biodiversity, manage rainwater, and provide expansive recreational areas for more than 8,000 new residents, alongside thousands of students and researchers. The overall district is intended to remain largely free from motorised traffic, with several public transport options including a new S-Bahn train station.

Dr. Andreas Kleinau, Chairman of the Management Board of Science City Hamburg Bahrenfeld GmbH, stated: " Cobe's design implements our ideas excellently. On this basis, we can swiftly start functional planning in order to turn plans into reality as quickly as possible. The overall picture of Science City Hamburg Bahrenfeld is becoming clearer and more tangible, thanks to the quarters at the Volkspark. Who wouldn't want to research, learn or live in this pioneering district?"
