C40 choose 82 teams for second round

International organisation C40 Cities have announced the 82 teams of architects, urban planners, developers, entrepreneurs, environmentalists and neighbourhood collectives set to compete in the final round of the Reinventing Cities competition. C40, a network taking action to address climate change, launched the competition in November 2017 to serve as a model for cities around the world seeking to deliver healthy, green and economically viable development.

During the first phase of the competition, 230 expressions of interest were submitted from more than 1,200 companies and organisations, including leading architectural firms such as OMA, MVRDV, BIG, White Architekture, Carlo Ratti Associates, Rudy Riciotti, Jacques Ferrier, Tatiana Bilbao, Miralles Tagliabue, Arup, Perkins+Will and Gensler. Hundreds of innovative concepts were proposed, from innovative energy solutions and new construction materials to zero-waste schemes and urban farms.

Supported by C40, each participating city organised a selection committee, who judged the entries based on common criteria favouring creative teams and ambitious climate solutions. “The response to the Reinventing Cities competition has been incredible, with architects, designers, community and citizen groups submitting some truly thrilling proposals,” said Mark Watts, C40 Executive Director. “The shortlisted teams, announced today, will now develop detailed proposals and we can soon look forward to the sustainable reinvention of these sites in cities around the world.”

The winning teams will transform empty plots and abandoned buildings, historical mansions, underused car parks, and former industrial sites in 12 cities worldwide. The final submissions are expected early next year, with the winning team for each site announced in May.
