Mecanoo upgrade building first designed by Norman Foster
Tenderstream member Mecanoo’s latest interior project at The World Port Centre (WPC) in Rotterdam brings nature indoors, adding value and creating a sense of place for employees and visitors alike. Mecanoo was commissioned to upgrade the ground floor and part of the first floor of the 32-storey office building, which was designed by Norman Foster and completed in 2000. Situated next to Mecanoo’s iconic Montevideo Tower, the WPC occupies a prominent location overlooking the city and surrounding harbour.
The overall design for the revamp was based on the principles of providing good accessibility, improved connections to the outside, opportunities for social interaction and an inviting appearance at street level. The lobby concept is based on the semi-circle form of Foster’s building, containing various rooms where diverse formal and informal activities take place, from the security stations, welcome desk and lockers, to meeting spaces, lounges and the main bar.
Prioritising the wellbeing of its users, the project pursues WELL certification. To achieve this, Mecanoo’s strategy involved introducing water tap points and using natural sound-absorbing materials to create a pleasant working environment. In order to encourage a sense of connection with the outside, elements with a strong identity are visible from the building’s exterior, such as the Rotterdam Port Authority backlit logo and the airy curtain above the bar. A new spiral staircase connects the lobby and first floor, offering scenic views of the water. Various types of planters create a healthy atmosphere, with a generous terrace acting as an extension of the restaurant. With a bar along the perimeter, the terrace can host different events, from parties to lectures.
