Progress on plans to revitalise derelict 14-acre site

The second stage of engagement has gone live for proposals by Tenderstream member Studio Egret West and West Northamptonshire Council to transform the Greyfriars area of Northampton, through an extensive redevelopment of the town’s historic Corn Exchange Building, a former bus station site, a currently unused office building, two car parks, and areas known as the east and west islands.

The vision for Greyfriars is to open up the 14-acre site that has sat derelict for nearly a decade. Since the demolition of the bus station, it has lain empty, severed from the heart of the town and the market square by infrastructure, challenging level changes, and daunting passageways. At the heart of the new neighbourhood, Northampton’s first town park will form the centrepiece of a culture-led framework intended to revitalise abandoned buildings and amplify nature, creativity and multi-generational living in the town centre. 

On the appointment of Studio Egret West in October 2023, Cllr Dan Lister, cabinet member for economic development, town centre regeneration and growth, said: “We’re delighted that Studio Egret West will bring decades of expertise and knowledge to this project. They have been instrumental in leading the sustainable regeneration of areas across the country such as Mayfield in Manchester and Preston Barracks in Brighton. We look forward to working in partnership with them to create an innovative vision for the site, and engaging with our communities through public consultation.”

Until 9th June, the public can view and comment on the plans, which have been shaped by feedback from the community following an initial engagement that launched in December 2023. David West, founding director at Studio Egret West, stated: “Building upon the enthusiasm for and feedback on our initial proposals, we are excited to showcase our evolved vision to revamp Greyfriars. It is an energetic and transformational framework, curated to inject life back into this forgotten part of the town.”
