Waterloo precinct to be transformed by new transport hub

The new Waterloo Station on Sydney’s Metro Station is coming to life and will transform the surrounding precinct - masterplanned by Tenderstream member John McAslan and Partners - when it opens next year. All the station’s four lifts and seven escalators have been installed, with the fit-out of the station platform nearly complete. It follows Sydney Central as the firm’s second station design for the metro, which is Australia's biggest public transport project.

Situated at the heart of the Waterloo urban renewal scheme, the new station will act as a catalyst for further regeneration, while unlocking opportunities for local people. Due to complete in 2024, the design references local vernacular traditions in its materiality and form, as well as the area’s rich cultural histories and the site’s geology.

The station – designed in collaboration with Woods Bagot – is intended to position people at the centre of the transport experience, creating a welcoming hub in a series of below-ground spaces. Intuitive to navigate and naturally lit by a network of skylights, the new station will take pressure off Redfern and Green Square stations, and provide a new fast, safe and reliable metro rail link to key employment areas in the Sydney central business district, North Sydney and Barangaroo. It will also contribute to the NSW Government’s objective to transform the Waterloo and Redfern districts, while providing additional connectivity to the Australian Technology Park.

John McAslan + Partners’ Sydney Lead Troy Uleman identifies the project as a contributor to Sydney’s evolving identity as a global city, as well as a highly local response to community, place and diversity, stating: ‘The district of Waterloo is a dynamic, multicultural context, rich and varied in history and demographics. The station will form a new gateway to the area and it’s critical that it has a strong Waterloo identity.’
