Lead 8 appointed to design new commercial terminal in Daxing

The ambitious Chinese programme to build the world’s largest airport has taken a step forward with the appointment of Lead 8 to design a new commercial terminal for the CNY80 billion facility, located in Beijing's Daxing district. The operator, China Resources Land, intends to create a commercial environment for aviation companies, as well as catering to the needs of the 100 million travellers expected to pass through the airport annually.

The project brief for called for a design vision encompassing a new generation of workspaces as part of an “air transport-related economic zone,” including integrated retail, dining and entertainment offerings. Lead 8 was awarded the project based on their innovative strategy for hybrid workspaces, and a proven track-record in aviation designs. Under the challenging site conditions, Lead 8 adopted a creative approach to integrate the diverse facilities, while working in collaboration with operators China Resources Land.

Simon Chua, Co Founder & Executive Director at Lead 8, stated: “The new aeropolis is a glimpse into the shape of the cities of the future. Our future workspaces are being influenced by the changing lifestyles of a new generation, as work, entertainment and hospitality blurs the boundaries to create new opportunities. We hope this scheme will inspire future airport developments, as there is a growing demand for quality workspaces with integrated natural environments, particularly in Beijing.”

The airport is expected to open in late 2019, as part of a regional plan to build the world’s largest mega-city connecting Beijing and neighbouring Tianjin. Construction is well underway at the passenger terminal, one of the last projects signed off by Zaha Hadid before her death in 2016.
