HASSELL to deliver mixed-use precinct

HASSELL has been appointed as design partner for the development of a striking urban area within the new Qianhai business district in Shenzhen. The firm's concept for the mixed-use Mawan Mile precinct combines parkland and cultural buildings, all connected by the design's most notable feature, a winding skydeck that weaves its way above the development.

The deck provides an uninterrupted cycling and jogging path, meeting a central goal of the scheme to promote healthy activities. Continuing the theme for wellbeing, the designs includes gardens for quiet reflection and social functions, playgrounds, group exercise areas, restaurant piazzas and open arts venues. The scheme also seeks to provide residents with further options for recreation in an area dominated by retail. A major entertainment precinct will be situated below ground, while the southern end of the development will house a new cultural district called M3 Place.

The flow of people though the area is a priority for the new precinct, situated in a major transportation node with multiple metro and high speed rail stations. HASSELL focussed on continuity at all levels to ensure pedestrians have priority and the public spaces face minimal disruption.

Following the contract win, HASSELL principal Dennis Ho commented that the design will evolve as the project moves forward, stating: “We are working with both China Merchants and the government authorities now to further develop the scheme. We know that it will change and what we proposed during the competition stage is a starting point, and we’re looking forward to the design process together with our key stakeholders.”
