Urban renewal contest concludes for 500-year old Hubei district

Lead8 has won an international competition for the Hubei Coordination Urban Renewal Project in Shenzhen. Appointed by China Resources Land (CRL), Lead8 is delivering the overall retail planning and design for plots in the scheme’s eastern district. Providing cultural, commercial, tourism and real estate opportunities, the project is set to become a major urban complex for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

As the birthplace of Shenzhen, the Hubei area is a challenging high-density site in which to carry out a renewal scheme. The contest brief called for a purposeful design to transform a 500-year-old village, while protecting the site’s culture. As well as creating a prominent commercial hub, the design is expected to fit the historical context. Benefitting from a transit-oriented approach, the scheme connects to five subway stations and will create active urban spaces to attract visitors.

Simon Chua, Lead 8 co-founder and executive director, stated: “With its unique background, Hubei is an exciting opportunity for us as designers to explore historic culture within a modern context. Our team at Lead8 is committed to maintaining the balance between the regeneration and protection of the Old Hubei Village.”
