Gmp present projects transforming heritage architecture for the future

The exhibition UMBAU. Nonstop Transformation by Tenderstream member von Gerkan, Marg, and Partners (gmp) opens in March at the AIT-ArchitekturSalon in Hamburg. UMBAU (conversion) refers to the ongoing transformation of existing structures, which is rapidly gaining importance as a construction principle, given increasing sustainability goals. Gmp has more than sixty projects in the firm’s forty years of UMBAU experience, with the four presented in the exhibition providing specific examples of current UMBAU practices that deal with the architectural heritage of the 20th century.

All exhibits demonstrate a conceptual approach which starts from a comprehensive inventory of the existing structure, and develops from the findings as an architectural evolution. In practice, UMBAU must integrate concepts for the structure’s new intended use, while looking to accommodate future possibilities, as a continuing project of social sustainability spanning generations.

UMBAU. Nonstop Transformation debuted in Venice in 2023, with the upcoming exhibition taking on a regional focus that includes the recently reopened Alsterschwimmhalle, a swimming pool complex with a striking roof construction considered to be one of the city’s landmarks. The project is contextualized by the Isarphilharmonie Gasteig HP8 in Munich (in use), the Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts (under construction), the Columbus Cruise Terminal in Bremerhaven (planned), and a tour of all gmp’s conversions in Hamburg, from 1977 to the present.

The exhibition opens on March 4th at 7pm and runs until March 27, 2024, from Mon–Wed, Fri, 10:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m.
