Competing visions proposed by six teams

University College Dublin and Malcolm Reading Consultants have revealed design proposals from the six shortlisted teams in the Future Campus – University College Dublin International Design Competition. Launched in February to find a vision for the 24 ha campus, the contest brief called for an urban design concept foregrounding a highly-visible and welcoming entrance precinct, together with proposals for a charismatic 8,000 sqm Centre for Creative Design.

The shortlist was selected in April by a panel chaired by Professor Andrew J. Deeks, President of University College Dublin, and is comprised of the following teams:

  • Diller Scofidio + Renfro (US)
  • John Ronan Architects (US)
  • O’Donnell + Tuomey (Ireland)
  • Steven Holl Architects (US)
  • Studio Libeskind (US)
  • UNStudio (Netherlands)

After unveiling the proposals, Malcolm Reading commented: “In commissioning an international competition, UCD has demonstrated its commitment to design excellence and confirmed its receptiveness to talent, ingenuity and imagination – as shown in the designs revealed today.” The campus development — and the Centre for Creative design in particular -  is expected to showcase innovation from the UCD, which has shaped modern Ireland politically and culturally. Noted alumni include James Joyce and film maker Gabriel Byrne, together with many architects and designers.

The jury will assess the final submissions and interview the teams in July, with the winner announcement anticipated for August. Professor Deeks stated:“We are seeking comments on the design proposals from the UCD community and their feedback will be of interest to the jury, who face the absorbing task of analysing the schemes and interviewing the teams. This is such an important project: the jury’s choice will shape the identity of the University over the coming decades and allow UCD to realise the potential of its exceptional campus.”
