Henning Larsen brings open Scandinavian design approach to North America

Last year, the City of Minneapolis issued a request for qualifications to select an architectural consultant for a new public services building, intended to form the key component of a campus meeting the city’s administrative needs. Henning Larsen secured the contract, together with MSR Design, and have now released images of their completed plan for the 385,000 sq ft facility.

Located diagonally across from the existing City Hall, the building will fulfill design brief specifications to consolidate city departments into one location, providing office space for the diverse needs of its employees. Project Director and Managing Director of Henning Larsen’s NYC office, Mike McElderry, stated: “For the City of Minneapolis, this project is an evolution that builds upon the City’s commitment to putting people first. Our process has been centered around this core value by giving a voice to user groups and stakeholders, each fundamentally driven to providing excellence in public service.”

The building will be elevated to create a visually and physically accessible ground floor, with the first two levels providing an open and welcoming environment to promote a sense of community.  “Our aim is to set a new architectural agenda in North America through our knowledge-based Scandinavian design approach,” stated Louis Becker, Henning Larsen’s Design Principal. “It is our hope that this building will foster openness - literally and figuratively - in the meeting between citizens and public servants - by exposing administrative functions and offering easy, equal access to everyone, regardless of age, gender and social background.”

The projected construction budget is 98m USD, with the building scheduled for completion by Autumn 2020.
