Scott Brownrigg enhance passenger experience for pilgrims to holy site
Designs by Tenderstream member Scott Brownrigg for the expansion of Prince Mohammad Bin Abdulaziz International Airport (Medina Airport) have been revealed. Developed for Tibah Airports, the expansion will enhance the passenger experience for the millions of Hajj and Umrah pilgrims who travel to Medina each season, and accommodate an increase of up to 17 million passengers per year by 2028 in line with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 to attract more international visitors to the Kingdom.
The existing Terminal 1 building, designed and delivered by Scott Brownrigg in 2014, will be converted into a dedicated international airport, featuring a newly renovated terminal to cater for Hajj and Umrah charter flights. The airport’s domestic operation will be relocated to a new 39,000 sq m terminal, interconnected to Terminal 1 via a new pier.
Designs for the new and renovated terminals echo the unique architectural identity of the original airport inspired by its role as a crucial gateway for millions of pilgrims to the holy site of Madinah. The new domestic terminal will be constructed over three levels using the same distinctive modular steel palm tree shaped columns, an important symbol of peace and prosperity.
Madinah Airport was the first commercial airport terminal to become LEED Gold certified in the Middle East and North Africa region, and the new proposals build upon this legacy, with a design that will match this Gold standard while also building in flexibility for further future expansion.
Maurice is the aviation sector director at Scott Brownrigg, stated: “The revitalised terminal and new domestic terminal will provide passengers with an illuminating experience, providing comfort and tranquillity. Our design aspires to reflect the unique essence of the Hijaz region and the revered holy city of Al-Madinah Al-Munawwarah.”
With designs approved, works are set to start on site later in 2024.
