Adaptable building to host university institute & secondary school

A contract has been signed with construction company Heerkens van Bavel for a new educational complex designed by Tenderstream member cepezed. Situated at a vacant site at Laan op Zuid in Rotterdam, the 22,500 sq m building will host the Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences Institute for Communication, Media and Information Technology, together with a secondary school.

The design envisages a clear building structure to keep the routing as logical as possible, with one school situated above the other. A striking element on the outer façade is the yellow ramp, which continues around the corner and leads to the secondary school entrance. BoschSlabbers Landscape Architects will design the exterior space, which anticipates a green route towards the metro station and the future Rijnhaven Park. The stepped building provides space for several green roofs, with a gym located at the top, alongside a 'sports roof'.

A wide inner street at ground level contains the reception, seating, podium staircases, meeting areas and a plaza for events and exhibitions. The street gives access to an urban lab, lifts, a bicycle shed, a restaurant and a multifunctional lecture hall. The flexible set-up of the proposed design leaves room for further development, enabling it to meet the ongoing requirements of both facilities.

The design will now be refined in close colaboration with Rotterdam University, educational foundation Stichting BOOR, and the City of Rotterdam. Construction is expected to start in the second quarter of 2024, with completion scheduled for summer 2026.
