Design teams welcomed in Australia for gallery site briefing

In October 2017, the search began for a team to create a new cultural destination in Adelaide. The challenge was to design an accessible community space integrating art, education, and nature through a proposed art gallery and public sculture garden. The finalists for the two-stage international competition were announced in December.

Last week, the six shortlisted designers arrived in Adelaide for a site visit and briefing, after an address by Jay Weatherill MP, Premier of South Australia and Minister for the Arts. First, they received the “Welcome to the Country” Kaurna Aboriginal greeting, a tradition dating back thousands of years. The project site is rich in Kaurna heritage, and the gallery will include Aboriginal art alongside European exhibits.

The finalists are set to reveal their concepts in April 2018, with the competition jury meeting the following month.

The high-profile teams, all featuring collaborations from international and Australian designers, include:
Adjaye Associates (London, UK) and BVN (Sydney, Australia);
BIG – Bjarke Ingels Group (Copenhagen, Denmark) and JPE Design Studio (Adelaide, Australia);
David Chipperfield Architects (London, UK) and SJB Architects (Sydney, Australia);
Diller Scofidio + Renfro (New York, USA) and Woods Bagot (Adelaide, Australia);
HASSELL (Melbourne, Australia) and SO-IL (New York, USA);
Khai Liew (Adelaide, Australia), Office of Ryue Nishizawa (Tokyo, Japan) and Durbach Block Jaggers (Sydney, Australia).
